A was released which “sees Harry transformed into a fat, hairy dwarf and stripped of his magical powers.” I’m sure J.K. Rowling will be upset if the real book isn’t as successful, but she’s got some real competition from what I can see. A quote from the book (which made me laugh) exemplifies what she has to go up against. He lies in the high-quality china bathtub, keeps wiping his face, and thinks about Dali’s face, which is as fat as the bottom of Aunt Penny. After having the image of a “fat, hairy dwarf” in my mind, I’d definitely go see the movie. Comment by Emma on December 31, 2002 @ • I am doing a research study. Comment by Luke on September 8, 2003 @ • My Dear Fellow Potterphiles, I am sure by now that you have all of heard of the fake Chinese HP novels, but how many of you have actually seen one, let alone have one in your collection? On a recent trip to southern China, I decided to find out for my self what all the fuss is about. The official copies were available, but I was impressed by neither their quality nor their translation, but especially not their price. Each volume costs as much as six times the price of most other books here and the cover art is very disappointing. Book five was launched just a few days ago, but it seems that only the large state owned bookstores are carrying the official copies. Already I have seen unofficial copies out on the street for a third of the official price. The other thing that has surprised me is the general lack of interest in HP. Even in the big, multi-story book cities, HP is tucked away at the back along with Goosebumps and LOTRs. I have been trying to find somebody that has actually read it but it is difficult. I think that is partly because the cultural background of HP does not translate well into Chinese. Magic here is linked to martial artists and holy men, not witches and wizards. Searching out the fakes has been a real adventure and very eye-opening. The police and other officials have cleaned out all the state owned bookstores (publishing is one of the most heavily government-controlled industries), so that only the over priced originals are left there. This meant heading out to all the small bookstores that are more often like rental shops, due to the low salaries of most Chinese people. Even around the big universities, the number of bookstores was very disappointing, with DVD stores outnumbering bookstores four or five to one. I tried the biggest book wholesale market in the province, but again with little success. Only a small percentage carried even the official versions. Generally speaking (and I say this as a writer published on the Chinese mainland) once any book is successful, and by this I mean selling more than ten thousand copies, unofficial copies inevitably start to appear. Mostly this is due to the inefficiency of the publishing houses and their sorry distribution chains. The largest publisher in Shanghai until very recently had not one person in the company working on PR or promotion. Only when they got involved in a joint venture with educational publisher Pearson did they begin this strange western practice. This is how antiquated these dinosaurs still are. Most new books are what we would call vanity books, based on the amount of connections (known here as ‘guanxi’) of the author, rather than the contents of the book. I myself have had royalty offers as low as 0.2 percent, which is not very rewarding when the cover price of most books is often less than the equivalent of one US dollar. Of course, when books are copied unofficially (which is usually very regularly – most universities have their own printing facilities with which they churn out thousands of copies of imported textbooks) few authors have the clout or the backing to do anything about it. Usually, only government censors are able to wield this power; writers themselves are ordinarily quite helpless. This is of course is very different if you are richer than the Queen of England, and have an army of corporate leeches, sorry lawyers to do all your dirty work. Anyway, back to HP. I have found a number of obscure and interesting titles, my favourite being “HP and the Ci Wa Wa (the porcelain doll).” This is one of the earlier fakes and is now very difficult to obtain. Yesterday I saw a Hong Kong anime inspired edition called “HP and Yelia”, with lots of strange looking cross-cultural pictures of Harry. I even found a Chinese language copy of “Parry Hotter and the Seamier Side of Magic”. I stocked up on a few copies each for any other hardcore HP collectors out there, who are looking for something unusual and unique to add to their collections. I have a brief but interesting price list available, so please email me if you would like to have a look. Best wishes Chris (Who is still braving the Cantonese heat, traffic and pollution to seek out even more obscure HP collectibles.) wenshidi at pub.guangzhou.gd.cn. I’ve already got all the original books, and 3 fake Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ebooks, two of which are quite good, and much fun to read. Please send me any fake books you can, and you will be appropriately credited for posting, and help spreading those books. The page will be ready sometime in February 2004. PS: To distinguish which books I already have, here are the names of the first chapters of the books: The Trip / Manual Labor / New Friends. PPS: And as for the idea of concealed parallel Wizarding world, I have been dreaming of going to wizarding school ever since I was 5 years old, long before 1st HP came out, should I blame Rowling??:)). Comment by Arthur on February 26, 2006 @ • actually, the chinese version of harry potter books 1-5 is the same, but the story they made for harry potter book6 is very different from the original one. I forgot the website because our It in our office just downloaded that adobe format file. Here are some parts: 1]Harry and Draco becamse friends in that book 2]Harry learned to be an Animagus 3]Dumbledore is the real master of Voldemort and the true villain all along 4]Ginny is Draco’s girlfriend 5]The Weasley family has a long lost oldest daughter, lost in a pyramid because of Dumbledore’s doing. Comment by uma on October 20, 2006 @ • I read the false version of harry potter book-5.some highlights of it are- 1)ginny and draco become lovers. 2)draco helps harry to put his own father in the azkaban. 3)harry is the prefect. 4)hermione and harry have secret love affair. 5)wormtail kills harry’s cousin. 6)draco becomes harry’ friend. 7)harry becomes animagus and chooses to be a golden griffin( a lion with wings) 8)harry comes to know that snape was his mother’s boyfriend. I was shocked to read the real story later on.But this fake story was better than the real one. One summer night, when Dumbledore arrives at Privet Drive to collect Harry Potter, his wand hand is blackened and shrivelled, but he will not reveal why. Rumours and suspicion spread through the wizarding world – it feels as if even Hogwarts itself might be under threat. Harry is convinced that Malfoy bears the Dark Mark: could there be a Death Eater amongst them? He will need powerful magic and true friends as, with the help of Dumbledore, he investigates Voldemort’s darkest secrets. Publishers: UK Print – US Print – Ebook –.

About If God Is Good Suffering is, in the end, God’s invitation to trust him. “As he did in his best-selling book, Heaven, Randy Alcorn delves deep into a profound subject, and through compelling stories, provocative questions and answers, and keen biblical understanding, he brings assurance and hope to all.” – Publishers Weekly Every one of us will experience suffering. You may be in such a time now. We see the presence of evil in the headlines every day. It all raises questions about God—Why would an all-good and all-powerful God create a world full of evil and suffering? How can there be a God if suffering and evil exist? Atheists such as Richard Dawkins and even former believers like Bart Ehrman answer the question simply: The existence of suffering and evil proves there is no God. But in this illuminating book, best-selling author Randy Alcorn challenges the logic of disbelief, and brings a fresh, hopeful, and thoroughly biblical insight to the issues these important questions raise. Alcorn offers insights from his conversations with men and women whose lives have been torn apart by suffering, and yet whose faith in God burns brighter than ever. He reveals the big picture of who God is and what God is doing in the world—now and forever. And he shows the beauty of God’s sovereignty—how it ultimately triumphs over suffering and evil in our lives and the world around us. About If God Is Good Every one of us will experience suffering. The biblical doctrine of Heaven (the New Earth) is very under-taught, under-preached, and under-grasped by modern western Christianity but is a treasure chest full of un-ending gold for the soul. I recommend it with my entire reputation. Have to say this book was largely a 476-page exercise in begging-the-question. Alcorn begins by assuming that the New Jerusalem of Revelation and the New Heavens/New Earth of Isaiah describe the final state of heaven and then deduces virtually everything about heaven from those axioms. If he’s wrong about those passages, then the book could only be about twenty pages long. Alcorn begins by assuming that the New Jerusalem of Revelation and the New Heavens/New Earth of Isaiah describe the final state of heaven and then deduces virtually everything about heaven from those axioms. If he’s wrong about those passages, then the book could only be about twenty pages long. The problem is that Isaiah’s description of the New Earth still includes death: “No more shall an infant from there live but a few days, Nor an old man who has not fulfilled his days; For the child shall die one hundred years old, But the sinner being one hundred years old shall be accursed” (Is. Though Alcorn cites the latter chapters of Isaiah to prove the final state of heaven over fifty times, he avoids this verse, except for one parenthetical dismissal of it (323). But if there’s death in “heaven” then it’s not the final state; it’s something else. In the same way, if Isaiah wasn’t speaking of the final state, then, we shouldn’t assume that John was speaking of heaven when he invoked Isaiah’s language at the end of Revelation. Alcorn repeatedly insists on literalism to make his case, but he doesn’t live up to it. John describes the New Jerusalem as a city and a bride. John sees “the bride, the Lamb’s wife” (Rev. But Alcorn has to ignore that literalism to only embrace the literalism of a city. In addition, notice death and sin lurk outside the New Jerusalem: “they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie” (Rev. If this were the final state of heaven, how could there be any fear that sin and abominations could enter it? I certainly don’t object to Alcorn’s take on heaven because of any “Christoplatonism” – i.e., the view that denigrates the resurrection and makes heaven purely spiritual, with no eating, drinking, dwelling, working, playing, etc. I believe we will do all those things in heaven in true bodies, and, like Alcorn, I believe the final state of heaven will be on a restored earth. So what’s the beef? The beef is that forcing all these texts which are really about the church on earth into the final state alone distorts the whole calling of the gospel, distorts the calling of the church. The church is supposed to be heaven on earth. We’re not supposed to wait for Christ to fix it all in the final state. He gave that job to us: that’s the Sermon on the Mount. We are the ones who pray “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Jesus brought the “kingdom of heaven” to earth. That’s the whole point of His mission. The cross and resurrection initiated the new world promised in Isaiah. The Holy Spirit came at Pentecost and started New Heavens and New Earth then. Jesus said the church was that “city on a hill” to the world. And when Christ and the Spirit have created that kind of just church community pictured in Isaiah, then we will face the final judgment, when that church that has followed the OT and Jesus’ path in caring for the weak and marginal will enter into greater glory (Matthew 25:31ff), the final state. But notice if you sequester all the church’s glorious duties off into the future state alone, then the church here and now becomes an irrelevant, intellectual club, like most conservative evangelical churches today. We firmly believe our job is only to get individual bodies into heaven, and we read most of the NT, especially Romans, as instructions about how to get into heaven, when in fact the NT message is much richer and more challenging than that (to get a fun shock try reading Romans as if it isn’t about heaven but more like Habakkuk and Isaiah). If we’re just an intellectual club then we’re reduced to cheap grace. And Alcorn gives us that cheap grace that prevails in conservative evangelical churches. How does Alcorn assure us that we’ll make it into heaven? His answer is purely intellectual: “Make the conscious decision to accept Christ’s sacrificial death on your behalf” (36) Isn’t it at all strange that Jesus doesn’t talk this way? And, as expected, Alcorn has to warn us against works: “Those who assume their religious activities alone will get them into Heaven will have a terrible surprise ahead” (36) – as if the promoters of cheap grace won’t be even more shocked. Bonhoeffer was on to simple NT truth: “Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of our Church. We are fighting today for costly grace.Cheap grace means grace as a doctrine, a principle, a system. An intellectual assent to that idea is held to be of itself sufficient to secure remission of sins.Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross.”. This is unquestionably the best book (other than the Bible, of course!) that I’ve ever read! At a whopping 500+ pages, it may appear daunting, but it is broken down into short, easy-to-manage chapters. I could almost feel myself being blessed each morning as I read from it, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I read it again someday (once everyone else in my family finishes reading it, since I’ve told them all that they absolutely must!). I could almost feel myself being blessed each morning as I read from it, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I read it again someday (once everyone else in my family finishes reading it, since I’ve told them all that they absolutely must!). Alcorn shatters the preconceived conception that most people today have of heaven – including myself. Instead he presents what he believes to be a more biblical picture – based on 25 years of study on the topic, and a dose of biblically-inspired imagination. He particularly dispels the notion that heaven is an ethereal world where we, as disembodied spirits, will spend eternity floating on clouds and playing harps – an image that causes many people to claim indifference as to whether they are going to heaven when they die or not. He places a lot of emphasis on the God’s promise to create a new heavens and a new earth. I was particularly enlightened by the explanation that God’s plan for redemption includes not just the souls of men, but the whole of creation. His ultimate plan is to redeem the entire world and return it to a state of complete perfection – devoid of sin, pain, and death. And that’s where we will dwell for all of eternity, in our humanity, but free of corruption. There is so much more that I could say, but you really should just read the book for yourself! It was okay, but it should have been much better. The subject deserves better, and Alcorn is capable of better. For openers, he crowded two or three hundred pages of essentials into almost six hundred. He hid his serious arguments in idle speculation and self-quotations (yes, he cites his own fictional works). No, the average reader will not finish the book. (My wife managed less than fifty pages.) His thesis, that Heaven is real, may seem an oxymoron to Christians, but he'd quickly add, 'No, really real. And there are two of them... From a certain point of view.' Acorn's tome is almost saved by the wonderful sidebars which litter the text, but what it really needs was a good editing. But this shouldn’t cause us to dismiss its glimpses of what an infinitely creative God might fashion across the broad expanse of the new heavens and the New Earth. This book has a jazzing affect on Christian readers - not only concerning the new earth - but also in their desire to share the good news of Jesus with those that do not yet believe. They are reminded that God is sovereignly at work using them as clay vessels to share with others His plan of redemption for this world. Randy Alcorn brings forth a lot of ideas I'd never thought of before (like an intermediate Heaven where believers go between the time they die and the bodily resurrection to the New Earth - it makes lots of sense and there is Biblical grounds for it, I'd just never heard that theory before) and while there are a few where I think he draws broader conclusions than the Scripture allows, on most of his theories I completely agree. I highly recommend it to any Christian. I know that for me, personally, it's made me look more forward to going to Heaven than ever before, and I just wish I could take all my loved ones with me. The biggest for me (although it wasn't overly significant in the book) being that wild is good and God-created, and architecture and cities are bad. I picture the idyllic country side and forests, mountains and streams, but cities are depicted in heaven, and architecture is a God given art form. The book was rather long winded, because he thoroughly explains each view point. I would like to own it, to revisit some of the sections I skimmed. I also have a feeling he probably doesn't have it ALL right-- and he says that himself-- but he certainly aids in a healthy and righteous anticipation of 'home'. Also, it has helped me gain perspective on life in snap shot moments. Yesterday was a hectic day. Eli had a field trip and I was getting stuff ready for a consignment sale, and I didn't want to go on the field trip because I was getting uptight about getting things done. In the end I knew it was more important to value my time with Eli than the couple bucks I could make, and in the end, I did get everything done and more. Alcorn used The Chronicles of Narnia for many examples. I love the Last Battle, and Lewis' depiction of heaven. That led to much good conversation with Eli about the future. My other favorite fictional account of heaven is in 'Peace Like a River' one of my favorite all-time books. I think Alcorn has a number of resources on Heaven, and I am particularly interested in the kid's version. I agree with John Wesley, 'The best is yet to be.' So if this is a possibility than why not be able to float on a cloud playing a harp. Anything is possible with God. The question is will he allow us to do these things? The author did an extremely thorough job uncovering the biblical truth about heaven. He definitely heightened my understanding of some specific truths. As well as opening my eyes to some I was unaware of. I did feel the book was somewhat repetitive though. He probably could have shortened it by a couple of hundred pages. It was because of this, in part, that I was not excited to sit down and read this book everyday. I would caution any new believer reading this book. The author quotes C.S. Lewis quite often. Lewis is a man who happens to be a Christian who writes stories. His books often paint a wonderful illustration of what we might experience on the new earth. They may also offer some biblical truth. However, his writings are not the inspired word of God. So be careful not to confuse the two. There is one more thing I would like to impress on everyone. I say this with caution because it is not my intent to accuse the author of bad hermeneutical practices or improper exegeses. Some of the passages the author references are not necessarily heaven passages. They may contain some information about heaven. But their original meaning may be something entirely different. The author sometimes reads between the lines of a passage to draw some conclusions about heaven. This is not a bad thing. I don’t think he crosses any lines in this matter. However, if you are a new believer don’t let this confuse you. I guess my point is. Do not neglect to read your bible. Investigate for yourself what the author is trying to communicate. As Christians, we should be filled with hope and desire for Heaven, not dread or avoidance. Though some might argue that Alcorn is too far-fetched or speculative in his perspective on Heaven, I am not sure that it is a problem. Most all of his speculations are based on Biblical citations, and a great number of them are presented precisely as such -- speculations. He openly admits that some of his book will be dead wrong, though he offers that some of it will be close, if not correct. I think his point in writing speculative thoughts is more so to start inciting thought about Heaven and dreaming of the greatness to come than to simply submit to the culture's view of Heaven. Our culture says we'll be bored and lonely and senseless in Heaven, but Alcorn desires for readers to challenge our culture. He presents a Heaven based on Scripture and filled with ideas I had never dreamed of for Heaven -- adventure, exploration, entertainment, friendships, etc. Reading his book made me more anxious for Heaven than I have ever been. And if when I get there, I find that my beloved pet is missing or that I can't actually sit down and have a discussion with CS Lewis, I don't think I'll feel a void. The biggest theme in Heaven is that God is there. And more than anything else, He is what we desire and He will leave no room for boredom or loneliness. I would encourage everyone to read this book and grow a hunger for Heaven. After all, Christians are no Earthly good if they're not Heavenly-minded. I've cried buckets of tears while reading this book. It gives me such a longing for what God has prepared for those who love Him. No biblical warrant mentioned whatsoever for that one. I also disagree with his theology behind why infants who die go to heaven. The things for which men strive hardly ever turn out to be as satisfying as they expected, and in the rare cases in which they do, sooner or later they are snatched away. For the Christians, all those partial, broken and fleeting perfections which he glimpses in the world around him, which wither in his grasp and he snatches away from him even while the wither, are found again, perfect, complete and lasting in the absolute beauty of God.” —. InFaith Painting, Shawn Taylor challenges our unconscious notions of what matters most to the Father and our means of gaining His acceptance. As people desperately seeking an encounter with God, it appears we have settled for 'being in the presence of one who was in the presence' of God, rather than finding that intimate relationship ourselves. We assume what we do is what matters most, yet we're surprised when the Father doesn't applaud our performance. For leaders, the temptation to bow to the cultural demand for showmanship is even greater. In a culture that worships athletes, idolizes singers, and exalts actors, is it really any wonder that church leaders are expected to command attention? Those at the pulpit are often more preoccupied with being dynamic speakers and attracting great crowds of people than ushering individuals into an intimate relationship with the Father. Jesus called for a different standard. As you read through the pages of this book, you'll begin a journey to discover God's heart. You'll be reminded that the creator of heaven and earth seeks a heart encounter with you which is not interpreted through a person on a platform. When God shows up in person, life changes. Author by: Daniel Arasse Language: en Publisher by: Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 85 Total Download: 422 File Size: 48,6 Mb Description: Through a historical analysis of Vermeer's method of production and a close reading of his art, Daniel Arasse explores the originality of this artist in the context of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. Arguing that Vermeer was not a painter in the conventional, commercial sense of his Dutch colleagues, Arasse suggests that his confrontation with painting represented a very personal and ambitious effort to define a new pictorial practice within the classical tradition of his art. By examining Vermeer's approach to image-making, the author finds that his works demonstrate the concept of painting as a medium through which the viewer senses the ungraspable and mysterious presence of life. Not only does this concept of painting carry on the traditions of Classical Antiquity and the High Renaissance, but it also relates to Catholic ideas about spiritual meditation and the power of images. Arasse shows that although Vermeer usually uses secular subject matter commonplace among his contemporaries, his treatment of iconography, light, and line, for example, varies greatly from theirs. Iconographical elements tend to hold meaning in suspense rather than to explicate; dazzling light emanates from interior objects; sfumato renders the presence of objects without depicting them. Discussing these and other aspects of Vermeer's art, Arasse locates the painter's genius in the reflexive, meditative nature of his works, each of which seems to be a painting about painting. God's Word is faithful; His message is absolute, certain, and guaranteed. God does not vacillate in His message or His plans; neither did the apostles, and neither should we. Everybody has a choice as to how to think about things. If you choose a negative, wrong attitude, then you will experience negative results. If you choose a positive, biblical “yes” attitude, you choose an attitude of faith and you will reap positive results. Author by: Spike Bucklow Language: en Publisher by: Reaktion Books Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 64 Total Download: 138 File Size: 55,6 Mb Description: Blood, rust, lava, wine—the flush of passion and the glow of approaching night—no color arrests our attention more than the color red. Today it is the flag of danger and seduction, of spirit and revolution, but throughout nearly all of human history it has held a special place in our aesthetics. In this book, Spike Bucklow brings us into the heart of this fiery hue to better understand the unique powers it has had over us. Bucklow takes us from a thirty-four-thousand-year-old shaman burial dress to the iPhone screen, exploring the myriad of purposes we have put red to as well as the materials from which we have looked to harvest it. And we have looked for it everywhere, from insects to tree resin to tar to excitable gasses. Bucklow also details how our pursuit of the color drove medieval alchemy and modern chemistry alike, and he shows us red’s many symbolic uses, its association with earth, blood, and fire, its coloring of caves and the throne rooms of goddesses, as well as national flags, fire trucks, power grids, and stoplights. The result is a material and cultural history that makes one see this color afresh, beating with vibrancy, a crucial part of the human visual world. Author by: James Elkins Language: en Publisher by: Routledge Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 35 Total Download: 305 File Size: 48,5 Mb Description: Unlike many books on painting that usually talk about art or painters, James Elkins’ compelling and original work focuses on alchemy, for like the alchemist, the painter seeks to transform and be transformed by the medium. In What Painting Is, James Elkins communicates the experience of painting beyond the traditional vocabulary of art history. Alchemy provides a magical language to explore what it is a painter really does in her or his studio - the smells, the mess, the struggle to control the uncontrollable, the special knowledge only painters hold of how colours will mix, and how they will look. Written from the perspective of a painter-turned-art historian, What Painting Is is like nothing you have ever read about art. In particular, the following design patterns are used throughout the text: singleton, container, enumeration, adapter and visitor. (PDF) Duane A. The target audience is specifically students who are learning Java for the first time. I remember when I first learnt Java, many of the trivialities were far from trivial and even the simple task of setting an environment variable was no small feat. I hope that if anything, this book will help students to accomplish these and many more trivial tasks and that they will not seem like small miracles. The goal of this book is to introduce students to the practicalities of the Java language and provide them with enough references to pursue the topic further. In this regard, each topic is presented in a simplistic manner and a topic does not cover all there is, especially those topics that are extremely broad like XML. Rather a brief introduction is given and then a list of suitable references for further information. Patrick Niemeyer, Daniel Leuck This book is for computer professionals, students, technical people, and Finnish hackers. It’s for everyone who has a need for hands-on experience with the Java language with an eye toward building real applications. This book could also be considered a crash course in object-oriented programming, networking, GUIs, and XML. As you learn about Java, you’ll also learn a powerful and practical approach to software development, beginning with a deep understanding of the fundamentals of Java and its APIs. Rudolf Pecinovsky You can find a whole range of programming textbooks intended for complete beginners. However, this one is exceptional to certain extent. The whole textbook is designed as a record of the dialogue of the author with his daughter who wants to learn programming. The author endeavors not to explain the Java programming language to the readers, but to teach them real programming. To teach them how to think and design the program as the experienced programmers do. Entire matter is explained in a very illustrative way which means even a current secondary school student can understand it quite simply. (PDF) Pat Morin The goal of this project is to free undergraduate computer science students from having to pay for an introductory data structures book. Elliotte Rusty Harold This book is written for experienced Java programmers who want to integrate XML into their systems. We start with the most basic concepts and are careful to define all terms when they are first used. The book presents each new idea in a logical progression. Larger topics, like recursion and object-oriented programming, are divided into smaller examples and introduced over the course of several chapters. Bruce Eckel This book assumes that you have some programming familiarity: you understand that a program is a collection of statements, the idea of a subroutine/function/macro, control statements such as “if” and looping constructs such as “while,” etc. However, you might have learned this in many places, such as programming with a macro language or working with a tool like Perl. As long as you’ve programmed to the point where you feel comfortable with the basic ideas of programming, you’ll be able to work through this book.
